Deep Run Roadhouse, nestled at 12379 Gayton Rd in Richmond, VA, serves up authentic, Texas-style barbecue that promises to satisfy even the most discerning palate. This barbecue restaurant is a true haven for lovers of smoked meats, where each dish is crafted with precision and an evident passion for smoky, tender flavors.
Their menu is a celebration of classic barbecue staples, highlighted by their renowned brisket, smoked to perfection with a Texas-style black pepper rub and sliced to order. The beef brisket sandwich, served on a toasted brioche bun, is a standout favorite, boasting rich, smoky layers that melt in your mouth. The pulled pork sandwich also deserves a special mention—fresh bone-in pork shoulder generously rubbed with brown sugar and black pepper, lightly chopped and served sans sauce, allowing the meat’s deep flavors to shine. Chicken is smoked with their signature rub, offering both white and dark meat that is delicately pulled and sauced, catering to all preferences.
Dive further into flavor with crowd-pleasing sides such as creamy mac n cheese, vibrant cole slaw, and their unforgettable hush puppies—golden, sweet, and fresh, perfectly complementing the smoky meats. For those craving a bit of indulgence, BBQ cheese wedges and smoked fried wings deliver bold, savory satisfaction, with the wings’ signature sauce layering complex notes of smoky heat and tang.
Deep Run Roadhouse also impresses with inventive offerings like their Train Wreck Burrito, loaded with your choice of pork or brisket, and the wedding tasting plate, ideal for those wanting a sampler’s delight. Their fish and chips and catfish bites offer a delightful departure from their meat-centric menu, showcasing their culinary versatility.
The dining atmosphere here is cozy yet lively enough to accommodate groups comfortably. It exudes a down-to-earth vibe where families and friends can gather to enjoy hearty, slow-smoked goodness in a welcoming setting. Though the building is modest in size, it provides just the right ambiance that invites lingering conversations and satisfied smiles.
Customers frequently praise the quality and flavor of the meats. Carla Brown shared how she was so captivated by the brisket sandwich and signature wings that she returned multiple times in one day—a true testament to the crave-worthy dishes. Russ Jones highlights the fresh, sweet hush puppies and perfectly juicy spare ribs, making them a must-try on your first visit. While Andrea P notes some inconsistencies with fatty chunks in the shredded meats, she still highly recommends the Train Wreck, underscoring the overall strength of the menu’s offerings. Dharini Trivedi appreciates the gluten-free and vegetarian options, such as BBQ portobello mushrooms and cowboy beans, proving the roadhouse’s commitment to inclusive dining. Nadia Giselle’s experience indicates that the most sought-after cuts disappear by evening, encouraging early arrival to enjoy the freshest selection of brisket, pork, and ribs.
Complement your meal with a thoughtfully curated selection of beers, ranging from classic Bud Light and Budweiser to local craft options like Hardywood RVA Lager and Ardent IPA, each pairing brilliantly with the deep smoky flavors of the barbecue.
Deep Run Roadhouse is more than just a barbecue spot—it’s a culinary experience that celebrates slow-smoked tradition with an inviting, unpretentious atmosphere. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick lunch or planning a catered event, their attention to detail, vibrant flavors, and genuine hospitality are sure to leave a lasting impression.
This was my first visit but it definitely won’t be my last. I stopped in to pick up lunch and ended up dining in then ordering takeout for dinner before leaving. I had the brisket sandwich with slaw for lunch and it was delicious. The wings with their signature sauce and toasted sweet potatoes were delicious as well. I’m looking forward to my next trip to try some of their other menu items.
The food here is delicious but our chopped/shredded meats had some very big lumps of fat that should have been pulled out by the chef! Our group all ordered the Train Wreck, two with pork and three with brisket. We highly recommend this dish, and we would have given this place 5 stars, but truly, the large fatty parts were pretty gross. We’ll still give it another try though! Their dishes have great flavors!
Went to a catering testing for my company’s holiday party and all the food was so amazing. Their cornbread and whipped honey butter is the best I’ve ever had. I bought a 6 piece to take home after the tasting. Awesome gluten free and vegetarian options. Everything on their menu except the bread and mac n cheese is gluten free and they have bbq portobello mushrooms and vegetarian cowboy beans!
Please don’t listen to the dorks judging this place for selling out of cuts of meat by the evening. This is a mark of a good BBQ place as good BBQ is time consuming and nothing should be left to waste! Arrive earlier if you’re worried about not getting certain cuts. We arrived at 1 pm and were able to get brisket and pork and ribs. Everything was phenomenal and flavorful and tender. Probably the first time I’ve been to a BBQ restaurant in RVA where everything was outstanding including sides. The sauces on hand were great and I loved the Carolina sauce. This is definitely going to be our regular BBQ spot from now on.
The food was great. The menu was a little intimidating for the first time going and realizing everything was a la carte. A fixed meat and 2 sides or 2 meats and 3 sides makes it easier and faster to order. Chicken wings are a must try. Spare ribs were juicy and falling off the bone. Hush puppies were fresh and sweet. The building was small and cozy yet enough tables for a nice size crowd. I'm looking forward to the new spot coming soon.
We had a catering order today and the food was delicious! The brisket was way more meat than fat, but still tender. Sides and sauces were great. Service was great. We had a slight issue with our order and it was fixed promptly. Will definitely be back!
Deep Run Roadhouse did an amazing job catering our rehearsal dinner! The food was absolutely delicious — everyone was raving about it all night. The portions were generous, everything was perfectly cooked, and the setup was seamless. Their team was friendly, professional, and made the whole process so easy from start to finish. It was the perfect meal to kick off our wedding weekend, and we couldn’t have been happier. Highly recommend Deep Run Roadhouse for any event!
